Gun Powder Man, a Historical Play at El Campo de Sonora — A Cultural Tapestry

logo: Sonora Chamber of Commerce

As part of El Campo de Sonora: A Cultural Tapestry, don’t miss a powerful live performance of Gunpowder Man, written by Rick Foster and performed by Sonora’s own Lesly Tejero Baker in Courthouse Park.

This one-woman show tells the gripping story of Chinese immigrants who escaped the violent aftermath of the Taiping Rebellion, helped build the transcontinental railroad, and faced the rising tide of racism in 1880s America. While many know of their role in the Central Pacific Railroad, Gunpowder Man dives deeper—illuminating the struggles, resilience, and spirit of those who lived through it.

Rich in cultural and historical detail, often humorous, and anchored by a strong, spunky female character, this play offers both education and inspiration.
